Mr & Mrs Kröller Müller (1992)

Excited about my first-in-a-very-long-time purchase of an original artwork!

(Drum roll)

Mr & Mrs. Kröller Müller

A linocut byt the Dutch artist Ondine de Kroon, and one in a series called The Collectors, depicting well-known art collectors through the centuries. The artist made ten prints of each linocut in the series and mine is No. 1 out of ten. So, there are nine other prints of Mr and Mrs somewhere in the country,  possibly even in the world. The image you are looking at is from her website (fingers crossed I haven’t breached any copyright laws by posting it here!).

I found a photograph of the young Mr and Mrs on the website of the Kröller-Müller Museum,  If you click on the link, you can see that they were not quite the ancient Dutch burgers that the print suggests, but I like the print for its playful allusion to all those endless portraits of Dutch dignitaries that figure so prominently in every town and historical museum here. I also like the way de Kroon juxtaposes the traditional couple with the modern art in their collection. In real life, the colors are much more vivid and the paper has a lot of texture, which doesn’t show up at all in the photograph. Can’t wait to have it properly framed and hanging in the new flat next year!
