The Bechdel Test

A lighthearted, yet thought-provoking entry in honor of International Women’s Day.

The Bechdel Test for Women in Films
Next time you see a film, consider this: Are there at least two named women in the film? Do they talk to each other? Do they talk to each other about something other than a man?

So, how do the few films I’ve mentioned on this blog stack up? The Bride of Frankenstein and True Grit do not earn a pass, but I must make a plea for True Grit. Yes, there is only one girl among men, but the film tells the story from the girl’s point of view and the script disposes of the romantic man-interest element in a couple of lines. Winter’s Bone and Black Swan are clear passes.
